Shopify product imports can save hours during a supplier catalog refresh. They can also create expensive cleanup work if prices, handles, variants, or images are wrong. This checklist explains what to inspect before uploading your next supplier CSV.
FREE PRECHECK: Inspect your own first ten CSV product rows in your browser → The scanner flags selected issues and exports a findings report. It cannot verify supplier claims, images, variants, or successful imports.
1. Confirm the CSV format and encoding
Shopify's product CSV column names are case-sensitive. Its current product template includes fields such as URL handle, Title, SKU, Price, and Product image URL. Older templates may use earlier header names. Use the template and format required by your store, and save the file as UTF-8. Importing a supplier's generic spreadsheet unchanged is not a safe assumption.
2. Check the actual products before the import
- Missing titles: Each intended product needs the correct display name. Empty product titles or broken handle/title combinations can produce ignored or invalid rows.
- Repeated handles: A product's URL handle identifies the product in the import. Confirm that multiple rows with the same handle represent intended image rows or variants, rather than unrelated products accidentally merged together.
- Duplicate or blank SKUs: Shopify can technically accommodate some repeated SKUs, but duplicates often damage warehouse mapping and inventory workflows. Decide which SKUs are intentional before processing.
- USD prices: Identify empty values, currency symbols, negative numbers, accidental decimal shifts, and possible wholesale-versus-retail price confusion.
-
Variant options: Changing option values can create new variant IDs and interfere with dependent integrations. Review
Option1 nameandOption1 valuebefore reimporting existing products. - Images: Image links need to be publicly accessible and point to the correct product. A plausible HTTPS URL is not proof that the image actually loads or that you own the rights to use it.
- Descriptions and claims: Check that color, dimensions, brand, contents, and inventory statements match the supplier's authorized information.
- Draft status: Keep unapproved listings in draft and do not publish new items during a validation-only pass.
- Backups and overwrites: Back up the existing catalog. Shopify warns that CSV imports cannot be canceled after they begin and that overwriting matching handles can replace data.
3. Separate technical checks from merchandising approval
A CSV preflight can flag missing columns, malformed prices, apparent SKU collisions, and suspicious image formats. It cannot verify supplier ownership, licensing, real stock, product accuracy, or successful Shopify import simply by scanning the file. Have a person review the exception report and inspect a small test set in a development store where available.
See the deliverables before buying: Download our free fictional 10-row supplier CSV preflight sample (ZIP). It includes a fictional source file, missing-price and SKU exceptions, normalized review output, and a Shopify draft-only CSV. This is a demonstration, not a report about a real customer or proof of successful import into a live Shopify store. Validate the contents and all supplier claims before importing.
View the row-by-row fictional case: See the ten source records, all four exception dispositions and the draft-only review limits → This is not a real-customer result or a completed Shopify import.
4. Inspect the fictional example; confirm the paid scope
Start by reviewing the free fictional 10-row preflight output sample. This downloadable illustration is not a free service for your own files and does not demonstrate a live Shopify import.
ATLAS Supply Co. offers a $149 fixed-scope pilot for up to 100 simple products. Confirm the scope before purchasing. The pilot produces human-reviewable CSV deliverables and a draft-only Shopify-oriented export; it does not verify supplier claims, request store login or automatically publish products. For questions, contact@bowlegsystems.com.
Prefer Upwork checkout? This same fixed-scope, $149 Supplier CSV Cleanup service is also available through Bowleg Systems on Upwork. View the approved Upwork service → Upwork orders include a 4-calendar-day delivery commitment after complete mandatory inputs. Keep any Upwork order, files, and payment inside Upwork.
For Shopify agencies and wholesale teams: If your workflow includes reviewing supplier spreadsheets before a client catalog import, see our Agency Catalog Preflight pilot for the fixed $149 scope, fictional sample outputs and inquiry details. No store-admin access or publishing rights are required.
