Price-Adjustment Guide: Target, Best Buy & Walmart

ATLAS LABS · FREE CONSUMER GUIDE · UPDATED OCTOBER 19, 2026

Did the price drop after you bought it?

Some retailers offer post-purchase price adjustments. Others do not. Before calling support, check the retailer, the clock, the seller, and exclusions. A lower advertised price does not guarantee a refund.

Quick decision path

  1. Is the exact same item still being sold by the retailer itself, rather than a third-party Marketplace seller?
  2. Was the purchase made within the retailer's applicable window? For Best Buy, check the return/exchange deadline shown on your own order.
  3. Is the currently lower price available to qualifying customers, and not excluded as Black Friday, clearance, limited-time, special hourly or another excluded promotion?
  4. Do you have the original purchase record, and can the retailer verify the lower price today?

Target — potentially 14 days

What to check: Target's published price-match guarantee generally allows requests at purchase or within 14 days for qualifying identical items whose price is lower at Target.com, Target stores or eligible automatically applied Target Circle offers. Target Plus partner items have separate requirements. Clearance, refurbished, some promotions and other exclusions apply. Target may require the original receipt or packing slip and proof of the currently valid offer.

How to ask: For purchases made in a store, visit Guest Services; for Target.com or app purchases, use online chat or Target Guest Services. Official Target policy ↗

Best Buy — check your actual return period

What to check: If Best Buy lowers its own price during the return/exchange period for a new eligible item purchased from Best Buy, you may request a match. Do not assume a universal 14-day window: membership and item category can affect your actual return/exchange deadline. Best Buy excludes Marketplace products, Black Friday offers, many special hourly/daily sales, clearance and other categories.

How to ask: Online-order requests are typically made through Best Buy chat or phone; store purchase requests at the store. The retailer verifies the offer. Official Best Buy policy ↗

Walmart.com — no retroactive adjustment for a later price drop

What to check: Walmart's published policy states Walmart.com purchases are not eligible for a price match when the item's Walmart.com price later decreases. In-store checkout price matching is different and is not a retroactive purchase adjustment.

What next: Do not assume a cashback entitlement; consult Walmart's separate return rules for any other options. Official Walmart policy ↗

What if the retailer says no?

Confirm the denial reason, and consult its published return and refund policies separately. Do not misrepresent a product, price, purchase date or receipt, and do not infer eligibility from another shopper's experience.

What we are building

ATLAS is testing a consumer service that could automatically flag qualifying price drops, provide policy-linked next steps and remind shoppers about deadlines. The automation does not exist yet, and no paid service is currently available.
